Bipolar disorder is a potentially debilitating and lifelong mental health disorder, which affects about 45 million people worldwide. We know that experiences of childhood trauma are common among people with bipolar disorder and can lead to a more severe or chronic form of the illness. What we wanted to understand is why experiences of childhood trauma are related to more severe symptoms in bipolar disorder. Therefore, we investigated whether one’s attachment – the deep and enduring emotional bonds we form with people we feel safe with – can help us address our research question.
